ANG 1 In this area, the sunlit hills, favourable climate conditions and hard-working wine-makers who diligently care for the grape vines are a recipe for exceptional wine and have been for hundreds of years. The first mention of the town and its surrounding villages dates back to the 15th century and is connected to wine-making which makes Šmartno ob Paki one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Slovenia. Wine-making persisted in this area even after the devastating attacks of grape phylloxera and downy mildew at the end of the 19th century. Therefore the recognisable vineyard landscape survived alongside vineyard cottages, which are the most beautiful remains of the vine-making tradition.
